This blog will target insurance fraud and abuse by health care providers

Welcome. Your visit to this forum indicates that you have more than a casual concern about the alarming incidence of fraud and waste in America's health care system. You probably share my opinion that health care institutions, regulatory agencies and insurance companies are not providing adequate oversight to curb the physical, financial and emotional abuse of patients. At the same time, not enough is being done to prosecute the dishonest individuals who are ripping-off medical providers and insurers.

I want to raise awareness about these issues, and to shine a light on wrongdoing and injustice where it exists. My expertise and experience as a medical doctor provides me valuable insight into the inner-workings of the medical industry. I am prepared to help consumers understand how markets, money and personalities can adversely affect their health care.

But I can't do it alone. I need the help of concerned people who are willing to fight for their rights and blow the whistle on those who are taking advantage of them. That is why I have established this blog. It is a clearinghouse for resolving legitimate complaints about the illegitimate activities of those who care more about money and power than they do about life and death.

We invite you to send us your comments. The information you provide in your correspondence to us is your decision, of course, but details are important as we weigh where we will focus our resources. We cannot investigate each complaint or reply to every comment, but we review each one. We are listening and we are looking for trends that need to be reported to the appropriate authorities.

More than $60 billion is lost to insurance fraud every year. At least half that, and probably more, is due to Medicare and Medicaid fraud, which is a direct expense for America's taxpayers. That is why the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched a Medicare-fraud Strike Force in five U.S. Cities, including Tampa. The investigation already has resulted in more than 60 federal indictments.

Fighting corruption on that level requires cooperation between law enforcement, insurance agents and medical professionals, from doctors to nurses to billing clerks. I intend to do my part to further that fight; I hope you will, too.

Thanks for sharing my concerns. Together, we can accomplish meaningful, grass-roots change in a health care system that desperately needs to maintain its credibility.
